Secret #5

Did Jesus Christ Come to Preach a Gospel About Himself?

"The Gospel of the Kingdom of God is not a gospel about Jesus Christ."

The Modern Church Preaches a Different Gospel Than Jesus Christ Did

My friends, let me be plain with you. If you sit in almost any Sunday-morning pulpit in the Western world, you will hear a gospel that centers on the person of Jesus Christ — His birth, His crucifixion, His resurrection, and the invitation to "accept Him" so that you may go to heaven when you die. That is the gospel about the Messenger. But the Gospel that Jesus of Nazareth Himself preached in the villages of Galilee was something else entirely.

Herbert W. Armstrong stated it as bluntly as it can be stated: the one and only Gospel Jesus Christ proclaimed was the Gospel of the Kingdom of God (Mystery of the Ages, chapter 7, "Mystery of the Kingdom of God"). Not a gospel of comfort. Not a gospel of self-improvement. Not even a gospel primarily about His own person. It was an announcement of a coming world-ruling government — and it changed the meaning of every parable, every miracle, and every prophecy in your Bible.

"Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel." Mark 1:14–15

Read that scripture carefully. Mark, inspired by the Holy Spirit, did not write that Jesus came preaching "a gospel about Himself." He wrote that Jesus came preaching the gospel of the Kingdom of God. Luke uses the same language: "I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent" (Luke 4:43). Matthew records the same commission for the entire end-time work: "And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come" (Matthew 24:14).

And yet if you were to walk into a hundred churches this Sunday and ask, "What is the Kingdom of God?" — you would receive a hundred contradictory answers. Some will call it a feeling in your heart. Others will call it the church itself. Others will call it heaven above the clouds. Mr. Armstrong showed from your own Bible that every one of those answers is wrong — and that the truth is more magnificent than any of them.

What Is the Gospel Jesus Preached?

The English word gospel simply means "good news." Herbert W. Armstrong was fond of saying that Jesus of Nazareth came to earth as a divine Newscaster — and the news He was sent to announce was the coming of a world-ruling government from God (Mystery of the Ages, chapter 7).

A kingdom, in the plain language of the Bible, has four component parts: a king, a body of ruled subjects, a defined territory, and a system of laws by which the territory is governed. When Jesus stood before Pontius Pilate, He confessed openly, "My kingdom is not of this world" (John 18:36) — meaning not of this world's present disorder. But that same Jesus taught His followers to pray every day, "Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven" (Matthew 6:10). The Gospel is the announcement that God's government is coming to this earth, and Jesus Christ Himself will sit on its throne.

And here is the breathtaking part — the part that made Mr. Armstrong cross an ocean to warn kings and prime ministers about it: God intends to share the rulership of that Kingdom with converted men and women. Christ Himself promised, "To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne" (Revelation 3:21). That is the true Gospel — and it is the reason mankind was created (The Incredible Human Potential, chapter 1).

The Kingdom of God Is a Government — And It Is Coming to Earth

The prophet Isaiah described the Kingdom in unmistakable political language seven hundred years before Christ was born.

"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder… Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever" (Isaiah 9:6–7). The prophet Daniel confirmed it: "The God of heaven shall set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed… it shall stand for ever" (Daniel 2:44). The book of Revelation seals it: "The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever" (Revelation 11:15).

Herbert W. Armstrong repeated the point until it could not be missed: the Kingdom of God is not something inside your heart, and it is not the church, and it is not the go-to-heaven reward of the saved. It is the coming ruling family of God, headquartered upon this earth, replacing every human government with the perfect law of the Creator (Mystery of the Ages, chapter 7). That is the news Jesus Christ was sent to announce. That is the Gospel He preached.

What You Will Discover

Mystery of the Ages is the last great work Herbert W. Armstrong completed before his death in 1986. He wrote it, in his own words, as the book he wished he could hand to every human being on earth. Every point in it is proven directly from your Bible. Here is just a portion of what you will learn about the true Gospel:

Chapter 01

The Mystery Revealed

Why the true Gospel has remained a "mystery" — hidden in plain sight in Scripture — from the professing Christian world for nearly 1,900 years.

Chapter 02

Mystery of God

Who and what God actually is — and why the answer transforms the meaning of every scripture Jesus ever quoted.

Chapter 06

Mystery of the Church

What the Church was truly called out of the world to do — and why "soul-saving crusade" was never the commission Christ gave it.

Chapter 07

Mystery of the Kingdom of God

The heart of the book. The definition of a kingdom, the true meaning of the Gospel Jesus preached, and the shocking evidence that a counterfeit gospel replaced it before the New Testament was even finished.

Chapter 03

Mystery of Angels and Evil Spirits

Who "the god of this world" (2 Corinthians 4:4) actually is — and why his existence explains the confusion in modern Christianity.

Chapter 04

Mystery of Man

The real reason for your existence, and why God chose to reproduce Himself through weak, mortal, physical human beings — the truth that unlocks the incredible human potential.

The Warning Paul Wrote Before the First Century Was Half Over

The apostle Paul saw this counterfeit coming in his own lifetime. He was astonished at how quickly it was happening.

Writing to the churches of Galatia, Paul rebuked them: "I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed" (Galatians 1:6–8). To the Corinthians he warned of preachers who arrive with "another Jesus… another spirit… another gospel" (2 Corinthians 11:4).

Herbert W. Armstrong showed from history that this is precisely what happened. Within roughly one generation after the death of the original apostles, the Gospel of the Kingdom that Jesus had preached was quietly replaced by a gospel about the person of the Messenger — and for nearly nineteen centuries the world scarcely heard the true message again (Mystery of the Ages, chapter 6, "Mystery of the Church"). Then, in 1934, a small radio broadcast in Eugene, Oregon began preaching that suppressed Kingdom message once more — and by the mid-1980s that same message reached more human beings than any religious broadcast in the history of the world.

The Government That Will Replace Every Government

"And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed… and it shall stand for ever" (Daniel 2:44).

That is the news Jesus of Nazareth was sent to announce. That is the message the early Church carried at the cost of their lives — and it is the same message that will yet be preached, as Christ Himself promised, "in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come" (Matthew 24:14). This is not religious speculation. This is not private interpretation. It is the Gospel Jesus Christ preached, proven point by point, scripture by scripture, in the pages of your own Bible.
