Secret #7

Where Are Your Dead Relatives Right Now?

"Heaven? Hell? Purgatory? There is a fourth answer — straight from your Bible."

Where Is Your Mother? Where Is Your Father? Where Is Your Child?

My friends, let me ask you plainly. When someone you loved was lowered into the grave, where did they go? Most of professing Christianity will confidently answer: straight to heaven, as a disembodied immortal soul. They preach it at every funeral. They print it on every sympathy card. And they cannot prove it from your Bible.

I challenge you — take a concordance. Open your King James Bible. Search every occurrence of the word soul from Genesis to Revelation. You will find the word roughly 1,600 times. And here is what will astonish you: not once is the word immortal applied to the soul. Not one time. Not one place. Not one prophet, not one apostle, not the Lord Jesus Christ Himself — never do they say the soul is immortal.

"Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die." Ezekiel 18:4

Read that verse again slowly. God Himself — through the prophet Ezekiel — declares the soul dies. He repeats the identical statement sixteen verses later, in Ezekiel 18:20. If the soul were the immortal, deathless spark most churches teach it to be, God could not truthfully make that statement. Either the Bible is wrong, or the tradition you were taught is wrong. Both cannot stand.

And what your Bible teaches instead — the truth Herbert W. Armstrong laid open plainly in his booklet Do You Have an Immortal Soul?, and the truth Mr. Armstrong expanded in The Incredible Human Potential — is more magnificent than the counterfeit ever was. But you have to be willing to lay tradition aside and let God's Word speak for itself.

"And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."
Genesis 2:7

What Is a Soul?

There is exactly one place in Scripture where God defines what a soul is. It is Genesis 2:7. And what it plainly says is the opposite of what Christendom teaches.

Notice the wording carefully. God took dust of the ground — ordinary physical matter — and He formed a body. Then He breathed into that body's nostrils the breath of life. And the result? Man became a living soul. There is no mention that man has a soul. There is no mention of an immortal spark descending from heaven. Man is a soul — the composite of a physical body plus the breath of life.

The Hebrew word rendered soul here is nephesh. It means a breathing creature. And in Genesis 1:24 the very same word is applied to the beasts of the field — cattle, creeping things, wild animals. The identical Hebrew word your Bible translates soul in one verse it translates creature in the other. A cow is a nephesh. A crow is a nephesh. You are a nephesh. And when the breath departs and the body returns to dust, the nephesh — the living soul — ceases to be. This is precisely why Herbert W. Armstrong wrote in The Incredible Human Potential that man does not have a soul; man is a soul, and souls die.

Not From Moses. Not From Christ. From Plato.

If the immortal soul doctrine is not in your Bible, where did it come from? The historians are not shy about the answer. It came out of pagan Greek philosophy — and it entered Christianity by the back door.

Mr. Armstrong quoted the Jewish Encyclopedia in Do You Have an Immortal Soul?: the belief in an inherently immortal soul "came to the Jews from contact with Greek thought and chiefly through the philosophy of Plato." Herodotus, the father of history, traced the doctrine even further back — to the Egyptians. The Greeks refined it. Plato canonized it. And the Roman world absorbed it as if it were self-evident.

Then, in the centuries after the apostles fell asleep, a corrupted gentile Christianity absorbed Plato's teaching wholesale — along with Sunday-keeping, Christmas, Easter, and the Trinity formula — and dressed it up in biblical language. Today virtually every professing Christian on earth assumes the immortal soul doctrine is Bible truth. It is not. It is the doctrine of a pagan Greek philosopher the New Testament writers never once endorsed.

"For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing… Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished."
Ecclesiastes 9:5–6

The Dead Are Asleep — Awaiting the Trumpet

Christ Himself was as plain about this as He was about anything He ever taught. He did not say His dead friend Lazarus had gone to paradise. He said Lazarus was sleeping.

Read the record: "Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep…. Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead" (John 11:11–14). The Lord equated death with sleep by direct declaration. And then He performed the resurrection. If Lazarus had been enjoying four days of heavenly bliss, as Mr. Armstrong asked in Do You Have an Immortal Soul?, why on earth would Christ drag him back? What kind of friend would rip a beloved soul out of paradise and force him into a decaying body again?

The apostle Paul echoed the same doctrine to the Thessalonians: "I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him" (1 Thessalonians 4:13–14). And David — a man after God's own heart — wrote plainly: "His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish" (Psalm 146:4). The apostle Peter, preaching at Pentecost, confirmed it: "David… is both dead and buried… David is not ascended into the heavens" (Acts 2:29, 34).

What You Will Discover

The Incredible Human Potential — Herbert W. Armstrong's most sweeping single work — addresses the state of the dead, the purpose of the resurrection, and the reason your Creator brought you into existence at all. Every point is proven from your Bible, chapter and verse. Here is a portion of what you will learn:

Why the great churches of this world have never been able to answer the simplest question of all — what is a human being, and why was he made?

Chapter 04

Man Made From the Dust

The Genesis 2:7 account laid open verse by verse — and the Hebrew word nephesh traced through every use in the Old Testament.

Chapter 06

How God Planned to Reproduce Himself

The overlooked truth that dwarfs the immortal-soul counterfeit — the actual destiny God prepared for you before the foundation of the world.

Chapter 08

The Spirit In Man

What Job called the spirit in man (Job 32:8) — what it is, what it is not, and why every professing Christian confuses it with the soul.

Chapter 12

Is There Life After Death?

The chapter that walks you straight through John 11, 1 Thessalonians 4, 1 Corinthians 15, and Revelation 20 — and shows what the resurrection actually is.

Chapter 13

The Great White Throne

The staggering resurrection to physical life that awaits the billions who lived and died never knowing the true Christ — and what it means for your ancestors.

Not an Immortal Soul — a Resurrected One

Here is what most Christians miss. The truth Mr. Armstrong recovered is not less hopeful than the tradition — it is infinitely more so.

If the tradition were true, the immortal soul departs at death and is done — frozen forever in whatever spiritual state it happened to be in when the heart stopped. Trillions of souls consigned to eternal torment because they had never so much as heard the name of Jesus. That is not the God of the Bible. That is a monster.

The truth is this: the dead sleep, and the dead shall rise. Paul wrote it plainly: "Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible" (1 Corinthians 15:51–52). The immortal soul doctrine has no room for a resurrection. The Bible doctrine makes the resurrection the whole point.

In the Great White Throne Judgment of Revelation 20, the untold billions who never had a chance in this life will stand up out of their graves, be given God's Holy Spirit for the first time, and be offered eternal life — real, conscious, glorified life — as spirit-born sons in God's own Family. That is the doctrine of Herbert W. Armstrong. That is the doctrine of your Bible. That is the hope Christ died to give you.

Your Loved Ones Are Not Lost. They Are Waiting.

"For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first" (1 Thessalonians 4:16).

They are not floating through clouds. They are not writhing in flame. They are asleep — unaware — awaiting a trumpet blast so loud and so glorious it will crack open every grave on the face of the earth. And on that day you will see your dead again. Not as ghosts. Not as disembodied spirits. But raised, changed, glorified, and welcomed home. That is Bible hope. That is the good news your Bible actually teaches.

"Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and shall come forth."
John 5:28–29
